Prairie Interlace: Weaving, Modernisms and the Expanded Frame, 1960–2000 looks back to the explosion of innovative textile-based art on the Canadian prairies during the second half of the twentieth century.

With a focus on weaving and other interlace practices, such as rug hooking and crochet, the exhibition examines how artists of diverse backgrounds wove new histories of fibre during a period of intense energy and collective creativity.

This touring exhibition, a collaboration between Nickle Galleries (Calgary, AB) and the MacKenzie Art Gallery (Regina, SK), features sixty artworks by forty-eight artists and draws on public and private collections from across Canada.

Prairies entrelacées: tissage, modernismes et cadre élargi, 1960–2000 se penche sur l’explosion de l’art textile novateur dans les prairies canadiennes au cours de la deuxième partie du vingtième siècle.

Mettant en évidence surtout le tissage et d’autres pratiques d’entrelacement comme le crochet et les tapis faits au crochet, l’exposition examine comment les artistes de milieux variés tissent de nouvelles histoires de fibre pendant une période d’énergie intense et de créativité collective. L’exposition itinérante, une collaboration entre Nickle Galleries (Calgary, Alberta) et MacKenzie Art Gallery (Regina, Saskatchewan), comprend soixante œuvres de quarante-huit artistes et provient de collections publiques et privées à travers le Canada.

PRAIRIES ENTRELACÉES: LES THÈMES

Peu importe où le regard se pose, les conséquences du modernisme sur les prairies sont évidentes. L’industrialisation de l’agriculture, l’intégration des réseaux ferroviaires et routiers et la grille de communication moderne embrassent l’horizon. Par ailleurs, les politiques sociales en matière de travail, d’immigration, de culture et les relations avec les Autochtones qui ont modifié pour toujours toute une région du Canada sont moins visibles. Ce sont ces conditions qui constituent l’assise des œuvres d’art à l’étude. La réponse des artistes textiles à ces forces se traduit dans la variété unique des thèmes qui caractérisent les tissages et les autres formes d’art textile de cette période, et les distinguent en même temps des autres centres régionaux. L’exposition Prairies entrelacées examine ces thèmes sous quatre grandes rubriques.

PRAIRIE INTERLACE: THEMES

The effects of modernism on the prairies are evident wherever you look. Industrialized agriculture, integrated rail and road networks, and a modern communications grid span the horizon. Less visible are the social policies on labour, immigration, culture, and Indigenous relations that forever altered an entire region of Canada. These are the conditions which ground the artworks under consideration. The response of textile-based artists to these forces is reflected in the unique variety of themes that both characterize the weavings and other fibre art forms of this time, but also distinguish them from other regional centres. Prairie Interlace examines these themes under four broad headings.
